In addition, we have posted numerous sources from the United Drug Enforcement Administration <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">(<a href=\"http:\/\/dea.gov\">DEA<\/a>)<\/span> and the United States Food &amp; Drug Administration (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fda.gov\">FDA<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>As a coalition, our priority is to educate our community on what these drugs are and where they are being found, to raise awareness on the prevalence and dangers, and to raise awareness on the availability of Narcan (also called Naloxone).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>About Fake Pills:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/large\/public\/2022-09\/OPCK%20Rainbow%20Fentanyl.jpg?h=7f412c8f&amp;itok=Prz1UBJV\" alt=\"Rainbow fentanyl close up photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/large\/public\/2022-07\/Authentic-Fake_0.PNG?h=7f412c8f&amp;itok=SOfHl61K\" alt=\"authentic-vs-fake oxycodone\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Criminal drug networks are mass-producing fake pills and falsely marketing them as legitimate prescription pills to deceive the American public.<\/li>\n<li>Fake pills are easy to purchase, widely available, often contain fentanyl or methamphetamine, and can be deadly.<\/li>\n<li>Fake prescription pills are easily accessible and often sold on social media and e-commerce platforms, making them available to anyone with a\u00a0smartphone, including minors.<\/li>\n<li>Many fake pills are made to look like prescription drugs such as oxycodone (Oxycontin\u00ae, Percocet\u00ae), hydrocodone (Vicodin\u00ae), and alprazolam (Xanax\u00ae); or stimulants like amphetamines (Adderall\u00ae).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Resource for parents:<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-11\/DEA-OPCK_Parent%20flyer_V2.pdf\">What Every Parent and Caregiver Needs to Know About FAKE PILLS<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Learn more: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/onepill\">DEA, One Pill Can Kill<\/a><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fentanyl:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong><em>&#8220;the single deadliest drug threat our nation has ever encountered&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-06\/Authentic_Fentanyl_lethal_dose_pencil.jpg\" alt=\"Authentic_Fentanyl_lethal_dose_pencil\" width=\"449\" height=\"273\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use as an analgesic (pain relief) and anesthetic. It is approximately 100 times more potent than\u00a0morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin as an analgesic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;DEA laboratory testing reveals that 6 out of 10 fentanyl-laces prescription pills now contain a potentially lethal dose of Fentanyl.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to the CDC, 107,375 people in the United States died of drug overdoses and drug poisonings in the 12-month period ending in January 2022.\u00a0 A staggering 67 percent of those deaths involved synthetic opioids like fentanyl.\u00a0 Some of these deaths were attributed to fentanyl mixed with other illicit drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin, with many users unaware they were actually taking fentanyl. <strong>Only two milligrams of fentanyl is considered a potentially lethal dose<\/strong>; it\u2019s particularly dangerous for someone who does not have a tolerance to opioids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h5>Learn more: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/factsheets\/fentanyl\">DEA, Fentanyl<\/a><\/span> \/ <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/fentanylawareness\">DEA, Fentanyl Awareness<\/a><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Xylazine:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/harmreduction.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/xylazine.jpeg\" alt=\"Xylazine | National Harm Reduction Coalition\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Xylazine is FDA-approved for use in animals as a sedative and pain reliever. Xylazine is not safe for use in humans and may result in serious and life-threatening side effects that appear to be\u00a0similar to those commonly associated with opioid use, making it difficult to distinguish opioid overdoses from xylazine exposure.\u00a0 Because xylazine is not an opioid, naloxone (Narcan) does not reverse its effects. Until supply is restored, there are alternative therapies including the extended-release version of amphetamine mixed salts available to health care professionals and their patients for amphetamine mixed salts\u2019 approved indications.
